Portugal Day - June 10th - ENSINUS ETP/ INETE

June 10th is the official national holiday of Portugal. This day is called ‘Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas,’ in English ‘Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities.’

The day pays tribute to Luís de Camões, who is considered as the country’s greatest national icon. He is most known for his poem, which narrates the story of Portuguese explorations in the 15th century and has since been accepted as a national poem in Portugal. However, because his birth date is uncertain, his death date, June 10, 1580, is commemorated as Portugal’s National Day.

The Carnation Revolution, which happened in 1974, expanded the celebrations to include the Portuguese communities , Portuguese migrants, and their descendants living all over the world.

This year we prepared an exhibition which celebrates the importance of Portuguese communities and invited students who were born there to take a photo near their flag.
